Role of Education: Education is the key to socio-economic development of a society. Basic  literacy is the foundation of such development in modern societies. The investment in human resourse development brings faster returns in the medium run  and  in the long run.  This fact  has been conclusively proved in the newly industrialized Countries of East Asia, which are  gradually  called  the  Asian    Tiggers    by  Western Commentators.  The 16 member Commission on New Asia in its report titled "Towards a New Asia" outlined the reasons far the rapid socio-economic    development in  the East Asian Countries, now known as the Asian Tigers. Apart from other reasons, this report emphasized human resource development as one of the significant factors helping these countries achieve such a rapid socio-economic growth. In contrast, -we in India, have the dubious distinction of having half of the world's illiterates. The World Bank Research shows that the pay-back in respect of the investments in education is faster than any other investments. In the late 1940's, a study sponsored by Govt. of Japan came to the conclusion that its labour force was lazy, over-paid and, therefore, could not be able to compete with China and India. However today, it is Japan which has become the World's economically most powerful Nation. The key is education, to be more specific, basic literacy.
The modern age is the age of information. Individuals live, a better life once they are equipped with correct and quality information. However, the world of information relating to any field of life is not available to any illiterate person Illiteracy is the most important bottleneck against    personality    and other growth of any individual. An illiterate person is deprived of his Gyan Chakshu (eye af Wisdom) which is the key to his success as an individual in any capacity or role in the society.
If people are most important in today's world, then their education should also be equally important. People education is also the key to success in a democratic functioning of any institution. Be it government or non-Government, education helps fight poverty, illiteracy, exploitation and oppression. Literacy is the first stage in people's education. Without education no human being can be self-reliant or self-confident and he will not be in a position to fight against the Injustice, social and other evils in society.
